Alfred Ernest Slack was born in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, in 1895, the son of William Slack, a butcher, and his wife Sarah Anne. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

During the First World War Slack left his job at the bank's Sheffield Union Bank branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment. He died in France on 16 May 1916. He was 21 years old.

 

Alfred Slack is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
