Arthur John Squire was born in Lynton, Devon, in 1896, son of Thomas Squire, a grocer and shopkeeper, and his wife Bessie Ann. He began working for Parr's Bank in about 1914.

During the First World War Squire left his job at the bank's Weston-super-Mare branch to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Corporal in the Tank Corps, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 20 November 1917. He was 20 years old.
