Charles Geoffrey Slocombe was born in Forest Row, Sussex, on 21 July 1893, the youngest son of Thomas Walter Slocombe and his wife Emma Maria. In 1910, on his 17th birthday, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In July 1915 Slocombe left his job at the bank's London Shoreditch branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Serjeant in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He died in a German hospital on 13 May 1917, of wounds received in action. He was 23 years old.

 

Charles Slocombe is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Liverpool Street Station branch.
