David Sharpe was born in Coatbridge in 1898, the son of Jane Sharpe. In July 1913, at the age of 14, he began working for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at the bank's Coatbridge branch.

 

Sharpe served as a soldier during the First World War, leaving his job at the bank to join the army. He was reported killed in France on 21 March 1918, when he was serving as a Private in the Gordon Highlanders. He was 19 years old.

 

David Sharpe is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
