Edward Patrick Stansfeld was born in Middlesex on 23 June 1892, the son of Arthur Stansfeld, a stockbroker's clerk, and his wife Louisa Mary. After leaving school he worked as a clerk for a wallpaper manufacturer, but in December 1911 took a job with London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In November 1915 Stansfeld left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army, becoming a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. While training at Aldershot he contracted meningitis, and died in the military isolation hospital there on 5 May 1916. He was 23 years old.
