Eric Slow

Bank: London County & Westminster Bank

Place of work: London Tower Bridge branch

Died: 14 May 1915

Eric Charles Dodd Slow was born on 6 May 1893. In 1910, on his 17th birthday, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

During the First World War Slow left his job at the bank's London Tower Bridge branch to join the army. By 1915 he was a Corporal in the London Regiment, on active service near Ypres. He was killed in action on 14 May 1915, while helping a wounded colleague under heavy fire. He was 22 years old.

A fellow soldier later wrote to Slow's parents, 'He was killed while attending a wounded man, and undoubtedly lost his life owing to that fact. He was greatly admired by all his company, especially his own section. To use a cavalryman's own words who witnessed his conduct from the trench, 'Look at that Corporal of yours over there attending that wounded man under such heavy fire, he is a brave chap and deserves to be mentioned'.'
