Eric Walter Smith was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, in 1899, the son of Robert Smith, a watchmaker and jeweller, and his wife Joan. In about 1915 he went to work for Parr's Bank at its Ashton-under-Lyne branch.

 

During the First World War Smith left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He was killed in action in Belgium on 29 April 1918. He was 19 years old.

 

Eric Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Ashton Under Lyne branch.
