Eustace Fowler Smart was born on 10 October 1894, the only son of Mr and Mrs Frank Smart. In November 1911, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

The day after the outbreak of war in 1914, Smart left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army. By 1916 he was a Lieutenant in the Leicester Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 8 February 1916. He was 21 years old.
