Gerald Hugh Stoodley was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, on 12 September 1893, the son of Charles Henry Stoodley, a civil servant, and his wife Martha. He worked for Drummonds Bank.

 

In September 1914 Stoodley left the bank to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Serjeant in the East Surrey Regiment. He died in Mesopotamia on 17 January 1917. He was 23 years old.
