Harold Henderson Smith was born in Scotland in 1895, the son of Alexander Henderson Smith, a master mariner, and his wife Georgina Honeyman Smith. In August 1910, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Dundee Hilltown branch.

 

During the First World War Smith left the bank to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 19 September 1918. He was 23 years old.
