Harold Albert Arden Spring was born in Bristol in 1897, the son of William Albert Spring, a bank manager, and his wife Jessie. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

During the First World War Spring left his job at the bank's Nottingham Smiths Bank branch to join the army. He served for a time in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and by 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), on active service in France. He died on the Somme on 15 September 1916. He was 19 years old.

 

Harold Spring is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
