Herbert William Smith, known as William, was born on 7 July 1881. He was educated at St Mark's College, Chelsea. In January 1901, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank at its London Covent Garden branch. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Smith became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He later worked at London Bayswater branch, and then at London Westbourne Grove. He was also a member of the bank's staff rowing club.

 

In March 1916 Smith left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He died on 8 October 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 35 years old and left a widow, Violet Evelyn Irene, whom he had married in January 1916.
