James Parrott Seed was born on 10 July 1883, the son of George and Eleanor Seed. In June 1899 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co. After four years as a junior, he was promoted to a clerkship in 1903.

 

In March 1917 Seed left his job as a ledger clerk at the bank's Manchester head office to go on military service. In October that year he was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Seed was killed in action on the Western Front on 17 June 1918. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Elsa.
