James Service was born on 17 August 1890, the son of James and Margaret Service. In May 1907, at the age of 16, he joined National Bank of Scotland, initially working as an apprentice at its Gallowgate branch in Glasgow. He became a clerk there in May 1910 and moved to the bank's main Glasgow branch in April 1914.
In July 1917 Service left his job at the bank to go on military service, becoming a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died on 11 June 1919 at Dykebar War Hospital in Paisley. He was 28 years old.
James Service is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
