James Smith was born in Lundie, near Dundee, in 1892, the son of WIlliam Smith, a farmer, and his wife Jessie. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
During the First World War Smith left his job in the bank's London office to join the army, becoming a Lance Serjeant in the Seaforth Highlanders. He died in France on 7 August 1917. He was 24 years old.
James Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
