James Hampton Strachan was born in Brechin in 1896, the son of James and Helen Pearson Strachan. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its Brechin branch.
During the First World War Strachan left the bank to join the army, becoming a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on 6 June 1918. He was 22 years old.
James Strachan is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
