John Douglas Small was born on 15 January 1898. In October 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In June 1915 Small left his job as a clerk at the bank's Brighton West branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He died of meningitis in Winchester, Hampshire, on 29 September 1916. He was 18 years old.
