John Alexander Sutherland was born in Wigan in 1894, the son of Alexander and Christina Sutherland. From about 1910 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Sutherland left his job at the bank's Preston branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment, on active service in the Middle East. He was killed in action there on 8 December 1917 when serving as a Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment. He was 23 years old.
