John Swale

John Swale was born on 2 January 1888. In July 1904 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Manchester head office. He transferred to Ancoats branch later in 1904, and to Ordsall branch in 1906. He was promoted to a clerkship in 1909, and returned to work at head office in 1910.

 

At the outbreak of war in 1914 Swale left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, on active service in France. He died there on 17 February 1917, of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 29 years old.
