Louis Henry Schurer was born in London on 12 December 1869. He worked for some years as a boatman and coast guard, but by 1914 was a night watchman at Hull Union Bank branch of Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

Schurer was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve, and on the outbreak of war in 1914 was called to active duty. Petty Officer Schurer died on 22 September 1914 when the vessel in which he was serving, HMS Hogue, was sunk by a German U-boat in the North Sea. He was 44 years old and left a widow, Kate.

 

Louis Schurer is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
