Peter Smedley was born in Derby in 1893, the son of Peter and Mary Elizabeth Smedley. He began working for Parr's Bank in about 1910.

 

During the First World War Smedley left his job at the bank's Derby Midland Road branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 4 April 1917. He was 23 years old.

 

Peter Smedley is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Derby St Peter's Street branch.
