Robert Grewar Simpson was born in Forfarshire in 1894, the son of James and Mary Simpson. In about 1914 he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Simpson left his job at the bank's Derby Iron Gate branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lance Corporal in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on active service in France. He was killed in action on the Somme on 27 April 1917. He was 22 years old.

 

Robert Simpson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Allenton Derby branch.
