Thomas Gaisford Surgey was born in Finchley on 19 April 1883, the son of Thomas Gaisford Surgey, a member of the stock exchange, and his wife Ellen Borlase Surgey. In 1900 Surgey went to work for The National Bank in London.

 

During the First World War Surgey left his job at the bank's London King's Cross branch to join the army, serving in the Middlesex Regiment and later the London Regiment. Rifleman Surgey died on the Western Front on 11 April 1917 of gunshot wounds in the abdomen. He was 33 years old.

 

Thomas Surgey is commemorated on a bank war memorial at the Royal Bank of Scotland London Cavendish Square branch
