Walter Laurence Coningham Silver, known as Laurence, was born in 1892, the younger son of Stephen Silver of East Oakley, Hampshire. He was educated at Haileybury.

 

Silver worked for the London bank of Child & Co in Fleet Street. In August 1914 he left his job at the bank to join the army. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 12 October 1916, when he was serving as a Lieutenant in the Suffolk Regiment. He was 24 years old.
