William Samuels was born in London in 1874, the son of William Samuels, a coachman, and his wife Hannah. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank as a messenger.

 

During the First World War Samuels left his job at the bank's London Princes Street office to go on military service, and by 1918 he was a Private in the Royal Air Force. He died on 8 November 1918, just three days before the signing of the Armistice. He was 44 years old and left a widow, Ellen Jane, and a daughter, Kathleen.

 

William Samuels is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
