William Thomas Joseph Scutchings was born in London in 1898, the son of William and Alice Scutchings. In September 1914 he went to work for the London bank of Coutts & Co.

 

In January 1917 Scutchings left his job at the bank to join the army, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in action near Ypres on 20 September 1917. He was 19 years old.
