William Elvidge Smith was born on 8 December 1892. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

During the First World War Smith left his job at the bank's Gainsborough branch to join the army, serving in the Lincolnshire Yeomanry. He died on 9 February 1919 of wounds received in action. He was 26 years old.

William Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
