William Strickland was born on 5 August 1900, the son of John William Strickland and his wife Elizabeth. In November 1915, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

In August 1918, shortly after his 18th birthday, Strickland left his job at the bank's Lancaster branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Manchester Regiment. He died of pneumonia two months later, on 17 October 1918.
