Alfred Roland Thomas was born on 14 March 1898, the son of Alfred Thomas, a professor of music, and his wife Jane Elizabeth. He was educated at the Boys' High School, Shrewsbury. In February 1915, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Newport branch in Shropshire. He transferred to Oswestry branch in April 1916.

 

During the First World War Thomas left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 23 March 1918. He was 20 years old.
