Herbert Johnston Townson was born in Cumberland in 1888, the son of John Townson, a commercial clerk, and his wife Dinah. From about September 1907 he worked for Bradford District Bank.

 

During the First World War Townson left his job at the bank's Bradford Market Street branch to join the army, initially as a Private in the West Yorkshire Regiment. He went to France in May 1915. In May 1917 he was commissioned into the same regiment, and by 1918 he was attached to the Royal Air Force. He died in a plane crash in France on 21 April 1918. He was 29 years old.
