James McGill Talman was born in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, in 1883, the son of John and Anne Talman. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its Dunfermline branch.

 

In September 1914 Talman left the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lance Serjeant in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died in France on 9 April 1917. He was 34 years old.

 

James Talman is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
