James Henry Bertram Tristram was born in Cannock, Staffordshire, in 1898, the son of William John Tristram, a Methodist minister, and his wife Elizabeth. He worked for National Provincial Bank of England.

 

During the First World War Tristram left his job at the bank's London Oxford Street branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company. He died in Belgium on 9 October 1917. He was 19 years old.
