John Thomas was born on 21 December 1893, the son of a farmer. In September 1911, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Carmarthen branch.

 

During the First World War Thomas left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 21 March 1918. He was 24 years old.
