Sidney Ernest Thompson was born in Sevenoaks, Kent, in 1894, the son of Arthur William Thompson, a bank worker, and his wife Emily Adeline. Like his father and his elder brother Arthur, Thompson became a bank worker.

 

In September 1914 Thompson left his job in the Country Office of Glyn, Mills, Currie & Co to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 25 September 1915. He was 21 years old.
