Wilfred John Taylor was born on 11 February 1881, the son of a clergyman. In April 1898, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London office. He moved to Mayfair branch in September 1899, then to Kensington High Street branch in July 1901. Later in that year he was transferred to St Marylebone branch, and in August 1908 he moved to Sloane Street, where in August 1913 he was appointed pro cashier, and in January 1914 junior cashier.

 

During the First World War Taylor left the bank to go on military service. Lance Corporal Wilfred John Taylor of the Honourable Artillery Company was killed in action on the Somme on 15 November 1916. He was 25 years old.
