William Thomson was born in Ayton, Berwickshire, in 1879, the son of Alexander Thomson and his wife. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its Ayton branch.
During the First World War Thomson left the bank to join the army. By 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He died in France on 26 August 1918. He was 39 years old.
William Thomson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
