William Gordon Stanley Thorman was born on 25 November 1889, the son of William Thorman, an engineer and oil merchant, and his wife Margaret. In May 1906, when he was 16 years old, he followed in the footsteps of his elder brother Laurie by going to work for National Provincial Bank of England. William started work at Darlington branch, and after completing his apprenticeship transferred to Harrogate branch as a clerk in March 1910.

 

During the First World War Thorman left the bank to join the army, becoming a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He died on 11 August 1916 of spotted fever contracted while training at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Linda May.
