Francis Claude Uzzell was born on 27 April 1896, the son of George Uzzell, head traveller and confidential manager for a firm of seed merchants in Cheltenham, and his wife Elizabeth.

 

In 1912, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Birmingham Frederick Street branch. In July 1915 he was promoted to clerk at the same branch.

 

During the First World War Uzzell joined the army, and by 1918 was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He died on 3 February 1918 of wounds received in action on the Somme two days earlier. He was 21 years old.
