Lewis John Harvey Vallis was born in Hemington, Somerset, in 1894, the son of Lewis Walter Vallis and his wife Florence Elizabeth. From about 1911 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Vallis left his job at the bank's Wincanton branch to join the army. He was posted to France as a Private in the Gloucestershire Regiment in November 1915. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on the Somme on 29 August 1916. He was 22 years old.

 

Lewis Vallis is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Shaftesbury The Commons branch.
