Arthur Gifford Wicks was born in Dover, Kent, in 1898, the son of John Gifford Wicks, a school teacher, and his wife Kate. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

During the First World War Wicks left his job at the bank's Chesham branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company. He died on the Somme on 2 April 1917. He was 19 years old.

 

Arthur Wicks is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
