Arthur Horace Woodgate was born in Stoke Newington on 14 December 1890, the son of Arthur William Woodgate and his wife Louisa Prior Woodgate. In June 1909, when he was 18 years old, Woodgate went to work for London & County Bank. Later that year London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Woodgate became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In June 1915 Woodgate left his job as a clerk at the bank's London St Mary Axe branch to join the army. Lieutenant Arthur Horace Woodgate of the Suffolk Regiment, attached to the Trench Mortar Battery, died on the Western Front on 9 April 1917. He was 26 years old.
