Bernard Wilcox was born in Bolton in 1894, the son of James Alfred Wilcox, a shopkeeper, and his wife Elizabeth Vaughan Wilcox. After leaving school he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co, living in Stone, Staffordshire, where his parents kept a grocery shop.

 

During the First World War Wilcox left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Coldstream Guards. He died on the Western Front on 8 October 1915.
