Clarence Howard Walker was born in Leyton, Essex, on 2 December 1891, the son of Robert and May Walker. He was educated at Merchant Taylors School.

 

In July 1910, when he was 18 years old, Walker went to work for London County & Westminster Bank at its Bishop's Stortford branch. He later worked at Richmond, Buckingham and Romford branches.

 

In May 1915 Walker left his job as a clerk at the bank's Romford branch to join the army. He joined the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps, and was commissioned into the Essex Regiment in October 1915.

 

Second Lieutenant Walker died on 28 September 1916 of gunshot wounds received in action two days earlier at Thiepval, France. He was 24 years old.
