Cyril William White was born on 9 May 1897, the son of George Henry Frederick White, manager of the goods department of the Great Northern Railway at Burton-on-Trent, and his wife Frances Maud. He was educated at Burton-on-Trent Grammar School.

 

In June 1915 he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Rugby branch. His manager there described him as 'very quick and accurate. Has made splendid progress'.

 

During the First World War White left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 4 October 1917. He was 20 years old.
