Donald Gurney Whatmoor was born on 6 June 1892, the son of Herbert Wade Whatmoor and his wife E Mary Whatmoor. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank, and was also a member of the bank's staff sports club. He passed the final examination of the Institute of Bankers in 1913.

 

Early in the First World War Whatmoor left his job at the bank's head office in Princes Street, London, to go on military service. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the Somme on 17 January 1916. He was 23 years old.
