Edgar Leech Whitehead was born on 30 April 1881, the son of Edwin and Hannah Whitehead. In August 1889 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Denton branch. He was promoted to a clerkship there in 1903. In 1908 he was transferred to the bank's Oldham branch, and in 1913 to its Ashton-under-Lyne branch.

 

In November 1915 Whitehead left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 24 July 1918. He was 37 years old.
