Ernest Gibson Wood was born on 1 August 1897, the son of Henry and Sophia Wood. In June 1915 he went to work for Bank of Whitehaven as an apprentice at its Cleator Moor branch. He continued working there following the bank's acquisition in 1916 by Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

In August 1916 Wood left the bank to go on military service. Private Ernest Gibson Wood of the Border Regiment was killed in action on the Western Front on 2 December 1917. He was 20 years old.
