Hayward Wane was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, in 1895, the son of John and Florence Wane. John Wane and Hayward's elder brother William both worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co, and in January 1914 Hayward himself also joined the bank, working at its Preston branch.

 

During the First World War Wane joined the army. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He died on the Somme on 18 October 1916. He was 21 years old.
