Henry Gordon Wright was born in Nottingham on 28 May 1886, the son of Thomas Wright, an architect and surveyor, and his wife Mary (née Sang). He was educated at Nottingham High School. In September 1902 he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co.

 

Wright was a territorial soldier, and was mobilised on the outbreak of war in August 1914, leaving his job at the bank's Sutton-in-Ashfield branch to go on active service. Captain Henry Gordon Wright of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) was killed in action at Ypres on 6 June 1915. He was 29 years old.
