Herbert Charles Wood was born on 28 January 1897. In April 1915, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

During the First World War Wood left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Islington branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the London Regiment. He was shot dead by a sniper in France on 22 August 1918. He was 21 years old.

 

Herbert Wood is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Islington Angel branch.
